Now I am curious..Could you save me some reading and tell/re-tell what your:
Operating System(eg.WinME?) and what is your Internet Service Provider(eg.AOL?)?

Something in the back of my mind(which aint far from the front) is tellin me some of these issues could be tied to these factors..

Learning is good!

If you chose to "Use separate settings for each user" when installing Opera 7, all settings are kept separate for each user on systems that support this. In Windows 2000 and XP, this directory is:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Opera

If your system does not support multiple users or you chose to not install Opera with separate user settings, all files and directories are located in the profile directory, which is a sub-directory of your Opera installation directory.
So may be we are deleting the wrong files. Do you have multi-user setup ? Can you search your disk for locations of files like 'vlink4.dat'. (search in hidden folders too). We have to find their exact location. Also, try deleting the file manually to see if the history is being deleted.

I apologize but I don't have Opera set up for multiple users :| I could try and uninstall it and install the latest version since I can't find any way to set it up for multiple users as it is now if you'd like. The vlink4.dat file for me is in the 'profile' folder since there is only one user for the browser.

Thankyou it works great. I needed to restart the application for the history to disappear from the sidebar though. I don't know if there is a way you could change it so that the history disappeared from the sidebar while the browser was still open. I apologize for dragging this on, I'm just trying to improve the software for future users of the product.

Since there are a few different types of browsers handled by this program I was thinking perhaps you could improve the History Erasing GUI. Instead of having one tab for Internet Explorer, one tab for Netscape and Mozilla and one tab for Firefox, have one tab that is just label 'Browsers'. When you click on this tab you'll get a list of the browsers currently installed on your system that the program handles in a menu format. When you highlight one of those browser names the options for that particular browser appears in the left hand side and you have the option to select or deselect what exactly you want erased. This way browsers could have multiple profiles (such as the tab for Netscape you currently have) for the browsers that support them and different, indepth plugins could be made for each browser without creating completely new tabs which would congest the history erasing GUI making it harder for users to find what they wanted to erase.

As with my first suggestion on automatically searching for plugins on users computers, perhaps this technique would work for my new browser tab idea as well? When you first install the program a search would be done for each of the browsers that are able to have their history erased and the items in the left side menu would only show those browsers that were installed. This way you could add plugins for browsers and such without having users wait for a new version to be released. They could merely download and install the plugin from the site, or perhaps running the Update utilitiy in the program would give them information on exactly what new plugins were available that weren't installed on their system and it gave them an option to checkmark them and, upon pressing a button, automatically download and install them into their program.

after installing a new plugin the program would again search for installed browsers and plugins and show those that were installed on their system. A button where users could run the scan themselves would also be handy.
