New version is confusing

Post by bellgamin » Fri Aug 17, 2007 7:25 pm

I have used Ace Utilities (AU) since Nov 13, 2003. I often recommend it on forums such as Wilders, CastleCops, & Gladiator Security Forum. It has been comfortable to use -- I knew what everything did and where everything was located.

Now I have installed version 4.0.0.4050 & find that it includes a couple of confusing changes as follows...

1- I can no longer clean index.dat without being an "expert." That is nonsense. What is so "expert" about doing that? I want AU to clean index.dat, as it has done in the past, but I do NOT want to have to be in "expert mode" with respect to registry cleaning.

REQUEST- How can I have AU clean index.dat WITHOUT having to be in "expert mode" with respect to registry cleaning?

2- AU now asks me if I want to create a "Restore point" when I try to delete unnecessary registry entries. I do want AU to _back-up_ the registry entries I delete, but I do NOT want AU to create a Windows restore point. I do not use Windows restore. I use imaging software for such purposes. So why does AU want to activate the Windows restore function when I do not want it?

REQUEST- I want AU to create a back-up file for registry deletions but I do NOT want AU to create a Windows "restore point." How I can do that?

If the problem is one of terminology -- then my REQUEST is that you clarify AU's terminology so that it does not conflict with the conventional Windows use of the term "restore point." As stated earlier, I want AU to create a "back-up file" of deletions, not a Windows restore point.

Concerning the CORRECT use of the term, "restore point", please see...

Hi

Thanks for your comments. We will change the text to "Restore Point".

1. Please note that this applies only to the cookie index.dat file ; not all index.dat files. You can still delete other index.dat files. We made this change as this could lead to deletion of all cookies.

You can switch to expert mode from Menu > Configuration Wizard of main window. You seem to be an expert ; so please switch to expert mode.

2. Uncheck the option 'Create System Restore Point' from Options > Registry Cleaner. Backup of the deleted entries will always be created ; so there is nothing to worry.

That's what I hoped was the case. Thanks, hari.
