Duplicate Files
Duplicate Files
I am a triallst with a new system - a defector from Symantec - so be gentle. When, on a scan, you are presented with any number of duplicate files, is there a procedure for which item/s to select for deletion?
Hi
Actually there is no way a program can tell which duplicate file to delete. If they are exact duplicates (assuming you are using the CRC option), then the only thing differentiating them is the path.
So a program cannot advise to delete C:\AA\file.txt rather than D:\BB\file.txt.

Are you a member of the Barmy Army ?'The Barmy Army is coming'

Thanks; I did check the Help but went to Clean Up and not Optimize - warned you to be gentle. One of my three sets of duplicates has a file that will open and one that doesn't - so I'll remove that. The other two sets are of three files: after checking Properties they all seem to have exactly the same time stamp but, in both cases, in two of the three Location Paths the last part of the address has a long sting of letters and numbers as opposed to a reconizable intelligent sounding description as is present in the third file, two of them even include /temp - do they sound like the right candidates for selection?
I'm a spiritual member rather than a fully paid-up one. Mind you, if the rain stays away and we get The Ashes back from the Aussies there might be 50m of us coming for Sachin.

Can you please send a report of the duplicate files to hari@acelogix.com ?
(To create a report, right click on the list after scanning, and click 'report' from the popup menu. Save the file)
We all want the Aussies to be beaten. England could have easily won the last one.

With duplicate files; If there is any doubt-and I mean
ANY doubt
-that you can safely delete a file then LEAVE IT THERE!
Most files are miniscule compared to the size of your hard drive..If you have threee dupes and a fourth appears it amounts to very little..Unless you need the file where it appears, for some reason..
Using this tool for mp3s',jpegs', mpegs', etc...is safest..
Deleting system files can always be dangerous and you may not know till weeks or months later..
Exception being if ,say, a worm or virus or other malicious file is mimiking a known OCX or EXE-etc...Then ACE dupe search can be a valuable tool....
First time I used a dupelicate tool;I deleted all but one of each file and crashed completely...I knew it was foolish to do this but wanted to see what would happen..Luckliy it was a computer I could afford to crash..
Just be judicious and when in doubt
"Leave it there!"
