Two questions before I buy

First, are all future upgrades and updates free? If not, how long are they free?

Also, with the wipe file deleted data function, what method of wiping is used? Is it based on Peter Gutman's paper? DoD? How many passes are made? Is there an option to modify the cleaning method?

Yes, future upgrades are free and it has been so thus far.

For data wipe, there is Gutmann method, 2 DOD standards and also a 'pseudorandom data' procedure. You can select the method you want. Gutmann and DOD standards have a preset number of passes while you can specify the number for pseudorandom data method. Also, you can make a custom wipe procedure from the pseudorandom skeleton.
