Ace Utilities File Manager

Post by Pisces » Fri Dec 24, 2004 5:19 am

Is there a way that I can get the program to auto select the duplicates if not auto delete them? I understand that you may not way the program to be responsible for the deletion of peoples files, but this is seriously impaired.
Auto Select would select X-1 of the X files listed.

When using duplicate folder finder I want to select all folders. CTRL A doesnt work.. I am not going to click through thousdands of files.

Thanks

Please "Right-Click" on any file and go down to "Check Mark" and you will be able to select "ALL" entries!

In Ace Utilties, automatic selection of scanned entries in the list is only done in the case of 'Junk file cleaner' and 'Registry scanner'. Auto-selection process is not enabled in the cases of 'duplicate file finder' and 'empty folder finder' tools cause we believe its prudent for the user to go through those entries due to obvious reasons.

But its not at all difficult to select the entries.

For 'empty folder' section, all you have to do is to right -click on an entry. This will give you a context menu from which you need to select 'Check All'.

For 'duplicate files' section, right click on the scanned list. From the resulting menu, select 'Check' -> 'One file in each group'.

You dont have to go through individual entries even if there are thousands. Now that was not so difficult. Was it ?

For the duplicate file finder I would still have to go through the list to deselect ones since you want to remove all but on right?

As I stated before you want to remove X-1 where X = number of results.

You must READ Ace Utilities HELP files! And it will tell you that AU WIIL NOT let you KNOW which duplicates to delete. Also, it's the user's responsibility to go through EACH duplicate pair etc. after AU finds these files, which BTW a user wouldn't have known were there in the first place. There's no further help that AU can give in this issue.

Well, the option you mentioned can be added to the 'duplicate file finder'. Future versions of AU "might" include it. Such an option can prove to be disastrous in the hands of a naive/novice user. We have to weigh the pros and cons of adding such an option, eh. We dont want the users to accidentally mess up their system, do we ?

But, it is strongly recommended that the user should review each file in the duplicate set shown. As Cal mentioned, AU cannot tell you which files need to be deleted among the several duplicates listed.

One time I deleted all but one copy of my dupelicate files..

It was "NOT A GOOD THING"...

some dlls and other system files need to be in different places for various reasons..
even with the best of programing safety it is still prudent to do as aneesh and cal say and carefully select which dupelicates to delete..

"When in doubt-----LEAVE IT ALONE-----You have enough free space and if the files isnt causing a problem...The lessor of two evils"

Well, for those brave souls who like to tinker with their system, who wont get a good night sleep unless they do something nasty, move the duplicate files to a seperate folder. Keep track of the original folders where the duplicate files belong to. Put the PC under observation for a few weeks. If you are satisfied enough, you can get rid of the duplicates.

Note: Troubles may not creep up for months. Acelogix will not be responsible for any problems caused by doing so.

When I run this tool in Ace Utilities, I never get the situation where I have 20 copies of the same file spread all over the hard drive. It is much more likely that I have 50 pairs of 50 different files. One example of this involves my picture files which may be duplicated and reside in different folders for the purpose of sending them to different people. I may not want delete any of them!

Some users don't understand the intent behind the "Dup Finder"! It is really to "Display" these files only. And the user is the one to decide what to delete (If any dups at all)!

Different users have different uses with the 'find duplicate files' tool. The options now available are kept as generic as possible. As I said in one of my earlier posts, future versions of AU 'may' include some specific actions for 'find duplicate files'.

We have a registry search tool, but not bundled with Ace Utilities at the moment. You can find it on the Acelogix website.
