System Restore Points Being Deleted

Post by pantomime_horse » Mon Nov 08, 2004 4:07 am

Anybody know if xp sp2 deletes all "Restore Points" after the "RPLIFEINTERVAL" REGISTRY FLAG"(which is set by default to 7776000 or (90 days))expires, or if only "Restore Points" greater than 90 days are deleted? I lost all my Restore Points this AM and cannot figure out why. I looked at the reg key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore" and subkey "CREATEFIRSTRUNRP" was set to "1" for yes and the subkeys "RPLIFEINTERVAL" AND "RPGLOBALINTERVAL" had both been set to their defaults at 10:30 AM this morning. This leads me to believe that xp deletes them all, not just those older than 90 days. (The CREATEFIRSTRUNRP flag was set to 1 because I ran a restore this AM which must have set all the flags). I'm assuming here that "CREATEFIRSTRUNRP" means this is the first run for a restore point after the expiration of the "RPLIFEINTERVAL" flag.

Any ideas?

thanks

I can't tell you why you lost your "Restore Points" after installing Win SP2---maybe you can search the Windows Help and Support site, but on the other hand do you backup your hard drive with CDs and a backup program like Ghost, Drive Image, etc.?

Did you "wipe" the free space of your drive recently ?

I installed SP2 sometime ago, so do not think that was the problem. Also I did not "wipe" drive recently. I have a backup, but I was just trying to determine if I'm correct in my thinking, for future reference. Losing restore points every 90 days could be a problem if you are not expecting it. If you hear anymore, let me know.

You know that "System Restores" max storage space is little over 7200 MB. But what ever amount of space you have set once it's reached the FIFO effect takes place.

Cal... restore Points

Post by pantomime_horse » Mon Nov 08, 2004 6:26 am

I have Restore Point storage set to max(about 12% which is about 9 gigabytes on my system I think.) It makes sense that the system would delete FIFO, but not all at once. Thats why I'm thinking that I am correct in my line of thought about the system deleting all points after the 90 day interval has been reached. I have done nothing that would cause this.

Emm*****la

I don't know if you mentioned if you are on a LAN Network with an Admin ..

If you are the restore points could be managed by the Administrator on a schedule/batchfile or ad-hoc basis..

That could explain the mystery..

JAZZ...

No I am not on network, just little ol me on PC at home. I still think this is being done by system upon expiration of the Interval previously mentioned.

emilemma, have you tried using "Windows Help & Support Center"? I'm sure if you give them all the particulars they can tell you what happened.

CAL...
I am going to xp help right off the menu which takes me to a screen that has items on the left and items on the right. The only one that looks useful is the one that says " Get support or find information in Windows XP Newsgroups" When i go there I don't see any "chat" areas.

You may have to install it from your "Win XP Pro" disk! Are you sure you are selecting the "Support" tab at the top of the window?

Because when I select it and then select "Get Help from Microsoft" in the left-pane I then have to select the country a drop down in the right-pane.

The next window I look under "Windows" and select "More - Windows" then I select under "Desktop Operating Systems" Windows XP Pro.

Then I click on sign-in and on the next window choose Win XP Pro and from there I choose to start "Chat Request" and accept the terms and conditions!

And This question is asked: "Is this Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition problem occuring on the computer you are using now?" And follow the rest of the instructions.
