Content.IE5 in Windows XP ?
Content.IE5 in Windows XP ?
Hi - I'm doing some P2P torrents (legal of course) and my current virus scanner (BitDefender) is almost daily finding new viruses in XP's temporary internet Content.IE5 sub-directories. My current virus scanning product can't seem to disinfect, quarantine, rename, or delete these, if they're in the Content.IE5 subdirectories. I am able however to manually delete them by rebooting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt, finding the appropriate Content.IE5 subdirectory, and then using the "erase" command for the file name that contains the virus. This becomes annoying to have to do it this way. I'd like to find a Windows based utility that as viruses hit Content.IE5 or it's subs, can safely and completely clean everything in Content.IE5 and/or it's subdirectories. Can Ace do this? Thanks.

Hi DenB - I appreciate the suggestion. I tried the MRU-Blaster. It doesn't touch the subdirectories in the following path:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
I think I figured out a possible work-a-round in XP. If you double click on "My Computer", it pops up what I think some people refer to as "Windows Explorer" (not Internet Explorer). If you try to access the above directory by clicking on the drive, then the folders/directories, in XP you'll never get to the Content.IE5 directory, it will stay hidden. It stays hidden, even if you go into "Tools-Folder Options-View" and click "show hidden files". But, if you type in, or cut-and-paste, the whole path above, it will show the Content.IE5 directory and subs in XP. From there, I can see all the files, that about a half dozen other supposed "Internet Trace" type cleaners, don't delete.
In any case, I stumbled upon this strange way of accessing that directory (Content IE5). For anyone else, it seems in XP you either have to paste that in, or type it in, if you click on the drives and folders trying to get to it, it will remain hidden.
Anyway, mission accomplished for now. I can see the subdirectories and their contents, so if I even need to delete something, now I can try from Windows instead of DOS.
Thanks

One other thing I found out today, playing with several Windows 2000 and XP machines at work.
You can access Content.IE5 from Windows 2000, and see that folder and it's subs, by clicking with your mouse on the drive and folders that lead to that path. But in XP, you can't get to it by clicking to it, it stays hidden. Weird, huh?
Shortcut I found in XP: In the "Windows Explorer" "Address" bar, you can click to the following directory with your mouse:
F:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Then, at the end of that path, type "\Content.IE5" you can get to the contents of that folder and it's subs that way!!!

That's a very interesting approach..
I know of something similar in Windows98: If you create a Toolbar of the "C:\>" drive and Dock it to the wall of the desktop, you can proceed to open
(using the direction arrows)
the C:\windows\Temporary Internet Files\IE5CONTENT(folder's') and see
the 5 actual "Index.dat" files and their text form file too ,,which are normally hidden in windows..
The small freeware(at last check)
"XFIND" by Tex-Hex@Xteq
http://www.xteq.com
will also allow you to find/see those hidden DOS bac files...
I have'nt tried to get those files with ACE yet(I use "Delindex")
But ,like Cal says,I think it may be possible...
Hari
Good luck

Ace has been doing it since 1.80. Use the options
Delete locked URL cache
Delete browser history
Delete Cache
options under the 'Internet Explorer' page of the EraseHistory tool.
Besides thi, unlike any other tool in the market, AU can delete the content.ie5 folder of other user profiles too
