AU 2.6 Registry Cleaner Data Execution Prevention error

Post by aggravatedintexas » Tue Nov 15, 2005 5:39 am

Ace Utilities 2.6 Registry Cleaner will only run ONCE on my new computer. After that it quickly causes a Data Execution Prevention error before it even completes display of its initial window. It won't even work after rebooting the computer. Using System Restore with the restore point generated by the install of Ace Utilities does allow it to run Registry Cleaner one more time and then the error occurs again. I tried an uninstall, and reinstall, and it does the same thing. The rest of the Ace Utilities seem to be working okay, so far, with the exception of a few bugs I've found.

This problem is happening using a trial copy of Ace Utilities 2.6 on a fresh install of WinXP Pro SP2 prior to installing any 3rd party security software, even prior to doing Windows Updates. Just latest basic motherboard drivers have been installed (excluding the troublesome & defective NVIDIA Network Manager). The system has an ASUS A8N-E MB, with AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ cpu, and 2 GB OCZ Platinum memory, all with conservative settings (no OCing, etc). I'm trying to use Ace Utilities (and other tools) to help me establish a baseline on the system before installing more software. The system was working well with a previous install of Windows XP Pro SP2, but I never tried Ace Utilities on it.

Obviously, I do have DEP turned on for all programs. I'm reluctant to disable Data Execution Prevention for Ace Utilities, since this error may indicate a fundamental problem, or incompatibility, that does need to be fixed before I should use the app on my system. Has anyone else had this problem. Does the Athlon 64 X2 stepping E6 processor have anything to do with this? Will completing the usual Microsoft Windows updates solve this problem? I'll try installing Ace Utilities again after I complete Windows Updates, but for now it's uninstall time for Ace Utilities.

Thanks in advance,

OB Ron

OB**n

First thing comes to mind is if the 30 day trial period is over?
Another thought is if you partitioned with something like WD(or other) software checkmarked SP1+ Operating system?

Seems the DEP idea is most plausible though..

AU v3.0 appears to solve the problem

Post by aggravatedintexas » Tue Nov 22, 2005 6:52 am

After Microsoft Windows XP Updates, AU v2.6 still caused Data Execution Prevention faults. It was only a few days into the 30 day trial period.
I just tried AU v3.0, and it doesn't appear to have the problem. Hopefully, some of the other bugs I noticed in v2.6 are also resolved.
At least I can give it a try now.

Thanks,

OB Ron
