Issues with Registry Defragmenter on 64-bit?

Post by Bikr » Wed Mar 12, 2008 1:57 pm

I just had an experience where I ran the Registry Defragmenter and it showed a large difference between the defragmented size (about 50% of before defrag size). Then after a re-boot, the machine is basically hosed and I have to do a Windows reinstall.

This has happened twice; once on a Windows 2003 server 64-bit macine and again on a Vista 64-bit machine. The hardware is a Dell Optiplex 755 Intel Core 2 Quad (Q6600). Fortunately they were both test machines.

Just wondering if it was a coincidence or 64-bit support isn't as robust as 32-bit?

I had a similar problem, using WinXP Pro x64. Upon rebooting, the XP theme was disabled, and it took three minutes to get to the login screen. It then tried to auto-login using my domain username (why?).

Using the Windows CD to boot and "repair" my installation, I was able to login and copy my user profile back in place. I had to reinstall a few apps though. I dont know what went wrong, but this certainly isn't supposed to happen.

We tried running the x64 version on our test systems and could not find any problems so far. Still, since a few users like yourself have run into issues, we'll definitely run more tests.

I had the same problem with Registry Defragmenter on Vista 64. My system crashed, became unusable and I had to reinstall Vista and everything else.
