au.exe caused trouble for Vista -- is there a cure?

Post by bxenakis » Thu May 07, 2009 7:07 pm

On my new HP Vista laptop, I ran "Remove Junk Files" and "Clean System Registry" using au.exe, and it seems to have caused a problem. Should I have only run au64.exe? What do I do to fix this?
I'm getting the following errors:
1) C++ errors
2) HTTP Error
3) Transport error (#12152) while retrieving data from endpoint `/ajax/friend_suggester.php': Unknown HTTP error #12152
4) The internet is shutting down for now apparent reason
5) All my saved pages are gone, my personal links, passowrd incryption notes, cannot access my pictures

Ace Utilities setup will determine, while installing, whether the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the program is to be installed depending on the Windows version. So, 32-bit version won't run on a 64-bit Windows and viceversa. Which version of Ace Utilities are you using? If it's below v4.0, then it's an old version and we suggest you to update it to the latest one.

'Remove Junk Files' usually does not create any problems like this. To reverse the changes made by 'Clean System Registry', you can 'merge' the backup file created during the cleaning process. To do that, start Ace Utilities, click 'Restore', select 'Registry Cleaner'. From the backup files shown in the list, select the appropriate file and click 'Restore'. Each file is created with the date and time of its creation as its file name. The errors you have mentioned seems not related to any issue that could have come from using Ace Utilities.

I ran version 2.4.1 on my Vista computer. Can I undo it?

It's making Facebook chat lose many characters. Does that make sense? Is that a registry issue? I did Restore, and it seems to have helped, maybe completely, but I'm not sure yet.

Only select tools make backups automatically, like 'Clean System Registry'. A few other tools, like 'Remove Junk Files', 'Find Duplicate Files' which don't create backups by default, can be instructed to create backups by explicitly settings respective options via Ace Utilities > Options page.

v2.4.1 is a older extinct version and hence using it with newer Windows flavors "may" cause problems for Windows. Since you ran the 'Clean System Registry' tool, it would help to restore the backups created by the tool at that time. Most probably, that will fix most issues, if not all. I 'm afraid that's the best that could be done at this moment. On another note, you could re-install the programs that are showing troubles.
