Ace Utilities is being Detected as a Virus

Post by Solemn » Sun Mar 02, 2008 4:13 am

I've just purchased System TuneUp a while ago, and when I was about to do a download, avast! antivirus popped up saying that it was a virus thus sending in a handful of alerts which prevented me from installing it let alone download it properly. This got me thinking that it was a false positive since I've heard quite a few good comments about Ace Utilities, so I went to the actual avast! forums and found that there was a post there also showing that when uploaded to VirusTotal, Ace Utilities was also being found as viruses by several other antivirus vendors!

Here's a list of what it seems to appear as for those that detected it:
Avast 4.7.1098.0 2008.02.28 Win32:SdBot-5252
Ikarus T3.1.1.20 2008.02.28 Backdoor.Win32.Rbot.cqk
Panda 9.0.0.4 2008.02.27 Suspicious file
Webwasher-Gateway 6.6.2 2008.02.28 Virus.Win32.FileInfector.gen (suspicious)
I'm pretty sure these programs offered by you are safe and feel that nobody else should be given doubts about the products if they really are, so hopefully some of the staff members here can help in reporting these false positives to clear things up. I'm really hoping that my issue will be resolved sometime soon as currently I can't even use the product without having to throw in a handful of exceptions which I'd rather not do. But other than that, thanks for your time in reading this.

Just an update to the situation, avast! just updated its signatures today and it looks like the false positive for this program have been resolved after a few reports of it :). However, the status of the other scanners may still need to be looked into.

I'm still getting the same error. avast is detecting au.exe, even inside the aufull.exe install file as a trojan. I do believe this is a false positive, but uninstalled Ace Utilities and put aufull.eve in my virus chest just to be sure. Once this is cleared up, I'll reinstall it. I submitted aufull.exe to avast to get the full story.

As of right now, avast antivirus is still detecting au.exe as a trojan... at least that's the result of my just downloading the file from this site and webshield stopping me.

Very confusing and disappointing.. It's gotta be a heuristics detection.. Whatever it is, there are several antivirus engines that don't like what au.exe is doing.

Just curious though, are you sure you have the latest definitions? It came out literally just a while ago and is labelled as 080302-0. I downloaded System TuneUp fine and also ran scans with the actual install file and where the rest of the product was located after the install without seeing any warnings popping up. The files are a bit different though seeing as how you have Ace Utilities and I have System TuneUp (although when I had the issue avast! wouldn't let me download it either).

Your right.. I had database version 080301-0.. I just manually updated the signatures and it seems to have stopped tagging it as a trojan.

I just checked after installing Avast v4.7 Professional Edition with the latest virus definitions/signatures with all its bells and whistles enabled. But I didn't get any warnings/popups while downloading Ace Utilities from the download page; nor did anything come up while scanning the .exe file after the download. Although, the 'Virustool' online check does seem to list aufull.exe after scanning which, I think, is a heuristic false positive alert. Users don't need to worry about downloading/installing Ace Utilities or anyother product from Acelogix Software.

Indeed, as earlier on I've stated that the recent update in signatures has removed the false positive (for only avast! though), so it's all good :). My only concern is to somehow contact the rest of those antivirus vendors listed so that nobody else who's new to Ace Utilities will get the wrong idea.

Avast has removed the alert tag on Ace Utilities after their latest virus definition updates.

Even though Prevx raises suspicion, it says "This file has not shown any unsafe tendencies and is likely to be safe to use..." as shown at this link: http://info.prevx.com/aboutprogramtext. ... 001943393D
