Hi,
AU 3.0.0.4037 is now ready for download, a few bug fixes and changes made.
It is recommended that Beta testers upgrade to this new build to fix any previous bugs and apply the new changes.
Please report any bugs found within this topic.

I have today installed the test program, AU 3.0.0.4037.

Here are my comments, which include both suggestions for improvements and discovered bugs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXPORT PREFERENCES - Bug

The Export Preference feature worked in AU-2.6.0 but does not work in AU-3.0-beta. The routine guides the user to select a target folder to writing the export file, but then no file is written.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAIN MODULE FREEZES - Improvement

The main module calls subordinate modules. When subordinate modules appear, the main module is frozen on the desktop; it can not be minimized, etc. This should be changed so that it is not frozen.

I use a desktop manager, called Virtual Desktop Manager. With this desktop utility, I can have four virtual desktops. AU is the only program I have experienced where the main module insists on appearing on all virtual desktops - properly implemented, an application will only appear maximized on the current desktop.

Even better, I would think the GUI would be cleaner if the main module disappears, when a subordinate module is called and made active. I don't want to see two application windows when the main one becomes temporarily inaccessible.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEFRAGMENTER MODULE - Improvement

It was easy enough for me to download the separate Defrag program. It is also great that it hooks into the main AU interface.

However, I think the marketing and installation might be cleaner if the Defrag module is prepackaged and integrated into the AU package. I bought AU over some competitors only because AU has a Defrager. I don't understand why it should be separate, but hey, maybe some users don't need this module?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
REMOVE JUNK FILES - Improvement

Individual files can be stored in the IgnoreList Editor; however, such files do not get excluded from appearing in the Scan for junk files. This is consistent with the document help file,

"Note: You cannot use the Ignore list editor to manipulate those set of entries that Ace Utilities ignore by default. You can only modify the entries you have added yourself."

My preferences is that such IgnoreList files apply to even the non-user specified file groups.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
DISK ANALYSIS - Improvement

In Disk Analysis - main window which shows drives only, F1 doesn't open help. This seems to be by design, since "help" is not referenced on the window. Of course, the subwindows which shows folder list on a drive does show "help".

It may be more consistent to include access to help on the main window also.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
WIPE SHELL EXTENSION - Explain?

Where can I find this new feature?

Just right-click on the File "Secure Erase" and Recyle Bin "Wipe Recyle Bin" feature.

Will check the 'export' bug.

It's too late to check the 'MAIN MODULE' issue. Will fix it in the next minor update.
WIPE SHELL EXTENSION - Explain?
Right click on any file on Explorer, and you will see a 'Secure Delete' item in the menu.

When do you expect this to occur?

WIPE SHELL EXTENSION - Explain?

Right click on any file on Explorer, and you will see a 'Secure Delete' item in the menu.
If I am doing this right, then it doesn't work for me. This is what I have done:

- Enter AU.
- Select: Options > Erase window
- Check on: [x] Enable explorer context menu
- Check on: [x] Enable Recycle Bin context menu
- Click OK

- Right click on Recycle Bin.
- Good news is the the context item does appear in Recycle Bin.
= Reg key is found in registry for this.

- Run Windows File Explorer
- Right click any file.
- Bad news is the context menu item does not appear in File Explorer.
= Reg key is not found in registry for this.

I am running Windows XP SP2. Am I doing something wrong, or is this broken?

Skeleton, do you see "Secure Erase" listed?

Hi Cal:

I am looking in AU > Options > Erase window

There is no entry called "Secure Erase".
There is some others, of which I thought the two relevant ones are:
[x] Enable explorer context menu
[x] Enable recycle bin context menu

The about screen reads, "3.0.0.4037"
Am I looking in the right place?

No, I'm talking about the context list after right-clicking!

Edited:

In windows FileExplorer, the context menu shows many items but not your "Secure Erase".

I have searched for "Secure Erase" in REGEDIT.EXE but no key appeared.

If it is otherwise existing in REGEDIT, where should I check?

The problem I think is system specific I believe, but I'll have to get back with you a little later because I've got to go out now. Say, about 3:00 p.m. if you're near the eastcoast of USA, and later if on the westcoast.

I'll try and check in then.

Maybe another bug:

When I first ran the Junk File Remover module on my C: drive, it properly found about 120 candidate files. Good; let's delete all of them. After clicking, "Delete", they supposedly were all delete.

Then I ran the scan again, and it found the last 80 files. It seems that only the first 40 were delete. OK, so lets delete those 80 files.

Sure enough, when I ran the scan again, the last 40 files showed up. I deleted those. Upon rescanning, no more files were found.

My guess is the buffer only holds about 40 files for deletion, even though it will show many more during a scan.

I must say Skeleton, I can't seem to identify with those results at all. Were you able to use the "Exclude" feature that I discussed with you in PM?

Cal,

The exclude problem seems to be resolved for me. I am able to list the file in the IgnoreListEditor, tehn uncheck the "[_] Do not use the ignore list while scanning the temp folder".

My other problems remain unresolved:
1) Multiple passes required on Junk file removing.
2) Preferences do not export.
3) Secure erase not appear on context menu.

Have you tried rebooting your PC after making the above settings, not that it's required but sometimes it may help.
